The cheapest auto insurance company in Newfoundland will vary, based on a few factors, including:
- Your personal driving history
- The amount of coverage you require
- Car insurers history of insuring a vehicle in your area (the amount of car insurance claims near you)
- A Surex Advisor can help by automatically comparing quotes from the different carriers we work with: Intact, Travelers, and Aviva to find you the best coverage and rate for your situation
Newfoundland car insurance uses a no-fault system. This means that you only ever deal with your own insurance company for any claims regardless of who was at fault for the accident. Under the no-fault model, anyone injured in traffic accidents is entitled to full medical and rehabilitation treatment, income replacement, and other benefits depending on the severity of their injuries. But, if you are a victim of an accident caused by a careless or bad driver, you do not collect damages from them.
Pros: quick claim payouts and a reduced number of lawsuits for minor injuries. (It speeds up the claims process and dissuades people from taking legal action).
Cons: raises car insurance premiums and is difficult for drivers to get compensation for pain and suffering.
Car insurance is mandatory in Newfoundland and Labrador and is provided by insurance companies and brokers. To help regulate and resolve any disputes for Nfld insurance, the Digital Government and Service NL are there to step in.
The three types of auto insurance available are:
- Third-Party Liability: this is the legal minimum of car insurance coverage needed in NB. Third-party liability insurance aims to protect you if you are involved in an accident, and may have to make a payment to another party.
- Liability, Collision & Comprehensive: Also known as full coverage, this is the maximum auto insurance coverage available.
- Liability & Collision OR Comprehensive: If you own your vehicle outright and are looking for more than the minimum auto or car insurance coverage, but not quite the maximum amount, this is where you’ll find what you need.
If you’re leasing or financing a vehicle, there’s a 99% chance that liability, collision & comprehensive coverage -- full coverage -- is required on the vehicle, as part of your leasing/financing agreement.
All the insurance companies in Newfoundland require drivers to have these 3 types of car insurance:
- Third-Party Liability - coverage in case you injure someone or damage their property
- Accident Benefits: coverage for injuries you sustain in a car accident
- Uninsured Motorist - coverage for injuries you and your family sustain following an accident with an uninsured driver.
- DCPD (direct compensation, property damage)- pays for the damage to your car if you're found not-at-fault in an accident. (As of Jan 1, 2020)
Similar to home insurance, if you feel you need more coverage, you can easily ask your insurance advisor for optional coverages. Such enhancements to your policy include:
- Collision insurance: pays to repair or replace your car if you're at fault in a collision
- Comprehensive insurance: protection against theft, vandalism, and inclement weather
- All perils: includes collision, comprehensive and protection if someone steals your car
- Specified perils: protects against specific risks (that you name) such as lightning, hail, flood etc....
The easiest way to get cheap auto insurance rates in Newfoundland is by being a driver who is eligible for car insurance discounts. Having partnered with the top car insurance carriers in Nfld, Surex is able to offer an array of discounts to people looking to lower their annual car insurance premiums. Auto insurance discounts include:
- Good credit discount - Auto insurers want clients that always pay their bills. Having a credit score above 650 (we will verify this by doing a soft hit of your credit score, with your permission) can save you up to 20% off your annual car insurance premium amount.
- Claims-free discount - If you’ve gone at least 6 years without an at-fault accident, this extended run of safe driving highlights to car insurers that the odds of you being at fault in an accident is lower than normal. Because of this, some auto insurers will offer a claims-free discount to you, which can save you up to 10% off your annual auto insurance premium amount.
- Conviction-free discount - Another way to demonstrate that you’re less of a risk to auto insurers is by going at least 3 years without a driving ticket (photo radar & parking tickets don’t count). Similar to a claims-free discount, a tickets-free discount can save you up to 10% off your annual car insurance amount.
Car insurance rates are determined by several factors, all of which contribute to the overall price you will pay. These are things that impact your car insurance rate:
- your postal code
- your driving history
- your mileage
- your car
In Newfoundland, the provincial government forbids insurers from using certain factors to determine car insurance rates, and this is seen as unique because they are standard factors in other provinces.
These factors include:
- your age
- your gender
- your insurance history
Some other factors that cannot impact your car insurance rates include; your marital status, the age of your car, accidents in which you were not at fault, being previously refused insurance by another company and being insured with the Facility Association.
- your car
